Charity[]
During this theme, Japan was struck with disaster. On March 11, 2011, the off coast of Japan was hit by an undersea megathrust earthquake of magnitude 9.0-9.1 (Mw) which triggered powerful tsunami waves. This disaster is known as the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami.
To help the victims of this disaster, Zynga and the Save the Children foundation came together and let players of all Zynga games donate to the Japan Earthquake and Tsunami Children Emergency Fund.[1][2]
The 'Japanese Countryside Home' that was released during this theme was also to help raise donations for charity. Of all YoCash spent on this house, Zynga used 100% of the proceeds to go to the Japan Earthquake Relief Fund.
In just 36 hours, Zynga gamers had donated more than $1 million to relief efforts. During the fundraising, Facebook also donated its traditional 30% cut on the Facebook Credits to contribute to the relief efforts.[3]
During the fundraising, Lady Gaga announced a personal donation of a total of $1.5 million to Zynga's initiative to raise funds for Save the Chilrden, as well as the Red Cross, through her sales of Japan Prayer Bracelets. Half the money went to Zynga's campaign, while the other half went to the Red Cross. Meanwhile, Zynga gamers alone had raised more than $2.5 million within 2 weeks.[4][5]
